FORT WORTH, TX - Nine years after graduating from one of Georgia’s proud HBCUs, Dr. Jared Williams has become a Lifetime Member of the Fort Valley State University National Alumni Association.
Dr. Jared Williams attended FVSU from 2008-2012. During his time at Fort Valley State, Dr. Williams received the Presidential Scholarship, became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., served as Mr. FVSU 2011-2012, and graduated with honors earning his B.S. in Plant Science - Biotechnology.
Dr. Williams has continued his devotion to personal development and service to his community with dogged determination since stepping off the campus of The Fort Valley State University. “Since graduating from FVSU, there are two things that I am most proud of,” he says. “First, continuing my education post-baccalaureate – getting my master’s at TCU and then my PhD at the University of North Texas – during a difficult period in my life while losing my mother to cancer. My mother was a huge inspiration in my life and helped to instill a strong value of serving my community.”
Because of his family’s support, Dr. Williams has dedicated his life-work to serving his community in Fort Worth, TX. Since graduating from FVSU, Dr. Williams has been committed to, as he puts it, “not only making a career, but making a career that’s aligned with my values and that leads to a lasting social impact in our world.”
This passion has fueled him to create meaningful solutions to tough issues including: producing affordable housing solutions with DRC Housing Solutions; working with the Tarrant Area Food Bank to ensure families have access to fresh produce in every food-insecure neighborhood across Tarrant County; aiming for equitable education across the state of Texas with Leadership ISD; and developing career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) for working families across Fort Worth in partnership with the Botanical Research Institute of Texas and the PEAR Institute at the McLean Hospital at Harvard University.
If there’s a thing or two that might surprise those who knew Dr. Williams back in his FVSU days, he says, “It’s probably me earning my doctorate and announcing my campaign recently to run for the 6th district of the Fort Worth City Council – although I don’t think it would necessarily be a complete surprise, given our beloved FVSU’s steep heritage in community and civic service.”
Looking back on his younger days, the 30-year-old says his advice to his 18-year-old self would be “a quote from my time at FVSU: ‘You can go anywhere from THE Fort Valley State University’ – I feel like I’m living proof of that.”
